Every May, the Administration for Community Living (ACL) leads the nation’s observance of Older Americans Month (OAM), a time to recognize older Americans’ contributions, highlight aging trends, and reaffirm our commitment to serving older adults.
Older Americans Month has a history dating back to 1963 when President John F. Kennedy designated May as Senior Citizens Month. In 1980, President Jimmy Carter expanded the observance to Older Americans Month, acknowledging the value and diversity of older Americans.”Flip the Script on Aging” aims to transform perceptions and discussions around aging, challenging stereotypes and misconceptions. The theme encourages individuals and communities to embrace the many opportunities that come with aging and to highlight the contributions of older adults. The ACL leads national celebrations, with local communities also organizing events and activities. Many resources and materials are available online, including social media ideas and activity suggestions.
“Flip the Script on Aging” encourages a shift in perspective, moving away from negative stereotypes and embracing the potential, contributions, and positive aspects of growing older.
The Administration for Community Living (ACL) was created around the fundamental principle that older adults and people of all ages with disabilities should be able to live where they choose, with the people they choose, and with the ability to participate fully in their communities. By funding services and supports provided primarily by networks of community-based organizations, and with investments in research, education, and innovation, ACL helps make this principle a reality for millions of Americans. Some of the areas where we at Brookhouse Home can honor older Americans include celebrating the contributions of older adults, exploring opportunities for staying active and engaged, and highlighting the potential for purpose, exploration, and connection that comes with aging.
