The Brookhouse Home for Women is looking forward to many of the activities taking place during this Salem 400 year including our upcoming participation in the Salem Arts Festival on June 5-7.
Here in Salem, we are celebrating Salem 400 all year long – as well as our 250th anniversary as a nation. Our connection to the history of Salem was beautifully illustrated during a Salem 400 event we participated in this past spring entitled “Organizing Generosity – 400 Years of Women Helping Women in Salem.”
Now, we are involved with our second Salem 400 event through our activities and community outreach program. Working with our residents and activities director Xera Quattromani, we recently completed an installation project for Salem 400. The project was inspired by Linda Mullen of Grace & Diggs, a company that uses recycled materials to make art that invites storytelling and cultivates whimsy. Kylie Sullivan of Salem Main Streets then invited us to be one of several communities taking part in this installation using colorful balls of yarn and a large wire mesh Number 4 character which our ladies worked on over two weeks. The work will be a part of the Salem 400 art installation that will be featured around the city for the Salem Arts Festival and will make its debut on June 5-7 as an outside display.
“The installation project and participation in Salem 400 have been an honor for us here,” said Judy Kane, Administrator at the Brookhouse Home. “Salem Main Streets inviting us to work on this installation project was a chance for our ladies to do some creative, hands-on activities that will be on display to the public first in June and then throughout the rest of the year. This is a wonderful moment for our residents and our entire community.”
